Who We Are
our History
Hope and a Home began over two decades ago as a volunteer-based, grassroots, local charity called For Love of Children, organized to find nurturing homes for 900 children who were crowded into Junior Village, an orphanage in D.C. Many of these children had been removed from their families because their parents lacked adequate housing. The need was critical.
We transformed eight vacant properties in the Columbia Heights neighborhood into 18 affordable apartments, and developed supplemental support programs that, through the years, have enabled hundreds of parents and children to achieve permanent housing, education success, rewarding work, and family stability.
In 2005, Hope and a Home was organized as an independent, nonprofit organization. We maintain a full-time staff of nine at our headquarters in D.C.’s Shaw neighborhood. Members of our volunteer Board of Directors comes from diverse backgrounds, with expertise in housing development, construction, social programs, law, fundraising, and marketing.
Our funding comes from foundations, special events, faith-based organizations, rental income, corporate contributions, and individual supporters like you. Hope and a Home has been recognized by Catalogue for Philanthropy as one of D.C.’s finest community-based nonprofits.
